CALM. Pet Remedy
A Natural, Evidence-Led Approach to Supporting a Balanced Nervous System and Better Overall Health For Dogs & Cats.
Dr Sinéad Mellett MVB CVHM, Veterinary Surgeon & Herbalist.
After many years practising conventional, small animal veterinary medicine, I became increasingly concerned by the growing reliance on potent human antidepressant and anxiolytic medications for our companion animals. While conventional pharmacology undoubtedly has an important and necessary place in veterinary medicine, I could also see a severe lack in the options available for dogs and cats experiencing mild to moderate anxiety, environmental sensitivity, and stress-related behavioural changes. Many of these patients do not require heavy sedation or long-term psychotropic intervention, yet in the majority of clinics I worked in, there were very little alternative options for pet owners besides the conventional offerings. The American Pet Products Association survey reported that about 2.8 million dog owners give their dogs calming or anti-anxiety medications such as fluoxetine each year. This clinical reality led me to further my studies into alternative veterinary medicine and ultimately led to the development of a naturally effective and science backed support for these cats & dogs, CALM. Pet Remedy.
In practice, anxiety is one of the most complex and emotionally charged presentations we manage. Dogs and cats experiencing chronic stress may show hypervigilance, reactivity, vocalisation, pacing, inappropriate elimination, appetite changes, dermatological over-grooming, or gastrointestinal disturbance. These are not simply behavioural inconveniences; they often reflect dysregulation within the autonomic nervous system and neurochemical pathways involving serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Left unaddressed, chronic stress can contribute to behavioural deterioration, immune dysregulation, and reduced quality of life. When I can, with natural support, my aim is not sedation but rather gentle nervous system regulation, allowing them to remain alert, engaged, while feeling calmer and more secure in their environment over time.

CALM. Pet Remedy was developed with this philosophy at its core. Each ingredient has been selected based on its pharmacological relevance, clinical tradition, and available research in veterinary medicine. Rather than relying on a single compound, the formulation is intentionally designed to harness synergy between botanical anxiolytics and nutritional support for neurotransmitter balance. The Natural Vet Company uses human-grade ingredients at clinically meaningful dosages and avoids unnecessary fillers, preservatives, or additives, ensuring that every component contributes to the overall efficacy of the remedy.
The Herbal Medicine Involved:
At the foundation of the formulation are three well-established herbal anxiolytics: chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), valerian (Valeriana officinalis), and passionflower (Passiflora incarnata). Chamomile has long been recognised for its mild calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Its flavonoid compound apigenin interacts with benzodiazepine receptors in the brain, producing a gentle anxiolytic effect without sedation. In veterinary herbal practice, chamomile is especially valued for its dual action on the nervous and digestive systems, making it particularly helpful for anxious animals prone to gastrointestinal sensitivity.
Valeriana officinalis, ‘Valerian’, one of the most widely studied botanical sedatives, acts primarily through modulation of GABA neurotransmission which is a key inhibitory pathway responsible for reducing neuronal excitability and promoting relaxation. Research across species demonstrates valerian’s ability to reduce agitation, support sleep regulation, and modulate stress responses. In clinical veterinary use, it is particularly helpful for situational anxiety such as noise sensitivity, travel stress, and kennel environments. I have been using Valerian for over 10 years in practice and found it particularly effective for cats. I will never forget a nun who had adopted a cat and came in to me in a clinic with her semi feral and much beloved pet cat. The cat had been suffering recurrent bladder issues due to stress. I gave her Valerian and when she returned two weeks later, she proclaimed that the Valerian was the best thing that had ever happened to both herself and the cat, they both had been ‘sleeping like babies’ after sprinkling it on her pillow!
Passionflower complements the actions of Valerian by further supporting GABAergic pathways, while also influencing stress hormone regulation. Its flavonoids and alkaloids contribute to reduced behavioural stress and improved emotional stability without impairing cognitive function.
In combination, these three botanicals create a balanced calming effect that avoids excessive sedation while still delivering meaningful support for anxious animals.
Synergistic Support:
To enhance and extend this calming effect, CALM. Pet Remedy includes L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid and biochemical precursor to serotonin and melatonin. L-tryptophan plays a central role in mood regulation and emotional resilience. Clinical research has explored its effects in dogs, with findings suggesting improvements in behavioural regulation and reductions in stress-related behaviours. DeNapoli and colleagues (2000) reported that dietary L-tryptophan influenced behavioural responses in dogs, while Bosch et al. (2009) observed beneficial effects on stress-related behaviours with tryptophan-supplemented diets. L-Tryptophan is used widely in equine medicine to support the nervous system of many ‘firey horses’. L-tryptophan supports serotonin synthesis, helping to stabilise mood, reduce tension, and restore balance to the nervous system.
The botanical extracts are delivered in a premium hemp oil base, chosen deliberately for both functional and nutritional reasons. Hemp oil enhances the absorption of lipophilic plant compounds while also providing a valuable profile of essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. This means pets receiving CALM. Pet Remedy benefit not only from behavioural support but also from improved skin, coat, and inflammatory balance, eliminating the need for additional oil supplementation.

One of the defining strengths of CALM. Pet Remedy is its synergistic design. Anxiety in companion animals is rarely driven by a single factor; rather, it reflects a complex interaction of neurochemistry, learning history, genetics, and environmental stressors. A multi-modal, gentle approach is therefore often the most effective. By combining botanicals that act across complementary pathways with L-tryptophan’s neurochemical support, the formulation provides calm that is both noticeable and sustainable, without dulling normal behaviour or interaction.
Clinical Indications:
In clinical practice and through owner feedback, CALM. Pet Remedy has proven especially helpful during predictable stressors such as fireworks, travel, veterinary visits, rehoming transitions, grooming, and seasonal household changes. Another common situation where we see a need for this support would be during crate rest after injuries or surgeries. The liquid format makes administration easy. While some pets demonstrate improvement quickly, the most consistent results are seen with regular use, as the nervous system gradually adapts and stabilises over time.
The formulation contains no artificial preservatives or fillers, and side effects are minimal compared with conventional anxiolytic medications. Most pets experience improved relaxation, reduced reactivity, and better sleep patterns without sedation or behavioural suppression.
Anxiety in pets can be distressing for both animals and their people. My goal in creating CALM. Pet Remedy was to offer a natural, clinically informed option that supports the nervous system safely and effectively. By combining well-researched botanicals with L-tryptophan in a highly bioavailable base, this formulation provides gentle yet meaningful calming support while respecting the physiology of dogs and cats. For pet owners seeking a thoughtful, evidence-led approach, CALM. Pet Remedy offers a practical way to support nervous system health, helping pets feel calmer, more secure, and better able to navigate the world around them.
